Experience the World Without Glasses
For those who wear glasses or contact lenses, a life without them can be quite tempting. Imagine not having to worry about dirty, smudgy glasses or tearing a contact lens! Luckily, corrective surgeries for refractive errors have been around for decades and are more efficient, successful, and accessible than ever before.
At Bluewater Optometry, we provide comprehensive laser eye surgery consultations and referrals to a trusted ophthalmologist for LASIK and PRK procedures, the 2 most common laser eye surgeries performed in Canada.
PRK
Photo-refractive keratectomy (PRK) was first introduced in the early 1990s. This procedure corrects refractive errors by reshaping the cornea (the clear dome of the eye).
The surgeon begins the surgery by removing the epithelium (the cornea’s outer layer) with a surgical blade or blunt instrument. Using an excimer laser, the surgeon shapes the tissue under the cornea just enough to correct your vision. A bandage lens is then placed on the eye to help with healing.
PRK has a high success rate and provides an effective and safe long-term vision correction.
LASIK
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was introduced shortly after PRK, in the mid-1990s.
During the LASIK procedure, the surgeon cuts a flap in the cornea and folds it back. Using an excimer laser, the surgeon reshapes the tissues underneath to correct your specific refractive error. The flap is then replaced to act as a bandage, and the eye is left to heal.
LASIK heals fast and with minimal postoperative discomfort.
