Learn More About Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is appealing to many patients as a way to correct refractive errors and limit the need for glasses or contact lenses. While laser eye surgery can be a great option for some, it is a surgical procedure and a consultation is needed to find out if you are a candidate.

At Bluewater Optometry, we provide consultations on some of the most popular laser eye procedures to determine your candidacy and answer your questions.

Laser Eye Surgery Basics

Laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure that corrects refractive errors in the eye such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia. This procedure uses a laser to make permanent changes to the shape of the cornea which helps to correct those refractive errors.

Types of Laser Eye Procedures We Consult On

We offer in-depth consultations for two of the most popular laser eye procedures: PRK and LASIK.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a type of laser eye surgery in which the surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea with a surgical instrument then the laser removes small amounts of tissue under the surface of the cornea. The healing time from this procedure is about a week.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a procedure where the surgeon first makes a flap in the cornea with a surgical tool, the flap is then lifted and the laser is used to remove calculated amounts of corneal tissue. After this, the flap is then placed back. Healing for LASIK is typically quicker than PRK as you can usually resume daily activities within a day or two.

What to Expect During a Laser Eye Consultation

During your laser eye surgery consultation, we will first do some testing to find out if you are a candidate. You may be a good candidate if you are an adult with healthy eyes and no underlying conditions that may make surgery difficult.

After we determine if you are a candidate, we can discuss the different procedures and answer any questions you may have about the process. It is important to set expectations about the procedure, as it doesn’t guarantee you won’t ever need corrective lenses again in your lifetime.

After this, you can go ahead with scheduling your surgery. After surgery, you may want to meet with us again to go over how your eyes are healing.
