Contact Lenses: A Clear Choice for Many

Contact lenses can be a great corrective option for many as the lens sits right on the surface of the eye and no frames are needed. This can benefit those who love an active lifestyle or live in a cold or wet climate where lenses may fog up.

Contact lenses differ from traditional glasses since they sit on top of your eye. If you’re interested in contacts, you’ll need to be examined and properly fitted so that you can go about your day seeing clearly and feeling comfortable.

At Bluewater Optometry, we offer contact lens exams, fitting, and appointments to discuss which type of contact lens may be right for you. Visit us today to learn more.

Types of Contact Lenses

At Bluewater Optometry, we offer soft contact lenses that tend to be comfortable and stay in well for active lifestyles. We also offer multifocal, spherical, and astigmatism contact lenses.

Our team will work with you to determine the best type of lenses for your specific needs during your contact lens exam and fitting.

What to Expect from a Contact Lens Exam & Fitting

A contact lens exam and fitting is an essential part of the contact process, especially if you are new to contact lenses. Contacts are quite different from wearing glasses and your eye needs to be measured in order to get a comfortable fit for your eye.

During a contact lens exam, we will test for all the same factors that we do during a traditional comprehensive eye exam, such as refractive errors and eye conditions or diseases. Your prescription for contacts could differ from the one you have for your glasses, so a contact lens prescription needs to be established before you can purchase them.

A consultation will also take place during a contact lens exam to determine what type of contact may be best for your lifestyle and individual vision concerns.

A contact lens fitting involves taking many measurements of the eye in order to get a comfortable fit for your contacts. These measurements include the corneal curvature, the front surface, the pupil, the iris, and tear film analysis for dry eye.

Together these measurements will help determine an appropriate contact lens for you.

Our Specialty Contacts

In addition to traditional soft or RGP lens types, there are also many specialty lenses available to help correct specific vision conditions. We offer these specialty contacts to our patients to provide clear and comfortable vision for your individual vision needs.

Multifocal contact lenses help patients see both near and far objects with multiple prescriptions in one contact lens. Multifocal contacts also provide a smooth transition between prescriptions without a harsh edge in certain areas of the lens, similar to progressive lenses in glasses.

Toric contact lenses have a different curvature to them to treat astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea of the eye is misshapen, causing blurriness or eye strain. These specialized contact lenses are designed to correct the irregular shape of the cornea that causes blurry or distorted vision.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, lenses are used to treat patients with myopia, or nearsightedness. Ortho-k lenses work by flattening the centre of the cornea, changing the way light enters the eye. These lenses are typically worn overnight to reshape the cornea and can be used by children as a form of myopia control.

Scleral lenses are RGP lenses that rest on the sclera, which is just outside of the cornea. Scleral lenses can be used to correct many refractive errors and can be especially great for those with dry eye as the lens has a saline reservoir for moisture.

Caring for Your Contacts

When it comes to caring for your contact lenses, there are a few basic tips to help your contacts stay clean and in good condition for everyday use:

  • Clean your contacts on a daily basis, using only contact disinfecting solution.
  • Do not sleep in your contact lenses, as they could get damaged or injure your eye.
  • Do not use any eye drops while wearing contact lenses, unless prescribed by your doctor.
  • Wear your contacts only for the length of time they are meant for.
  • Continue regular eye exams to check in on the effectiveness and fit of the contacts over time.
